We are American, and we are independent.
We make things happen.
We don’t need others.
In fact, we often say that we shoulder the weight of the world by ourselves in our lives.
We shoulder it with no significant help from those around us, strangers or friends alike.
In the end, we know it’s up to us to make things happen in our lives.

No One Is An Island
The story I just told above is a story, not the truth. It’s a story I have heard three or four times over the past two weeks from clients.
We do almost nothing in our lives without the help of others.
If you go out and buy anything, you are dependent on other people.
For example the food you buy at the grocery store. You are dependent on others to grow and pick your food, clean and package it, transport it, unload it, label it, and put it on the shelves of your local grocery store so that you can buy it.
Without the internet, cable, and telephone companies you would be without the technology you depend upon everyday to do your own job and stay in touch with family and friends.

No mechanics, no plumbers, no electricians, no doctors, no janitors, no sales clerks, no teachers, no social workers, no waitresses, no subway or bus drivers, no delivery truck drivers, no construction workers, no lawyers, no gas station attendants, no factory workers, etc.
Your life would come to a screeching halt if all those people you are dependent on every day suddenly decided to just leave everything they do to you.
We need each other to survive.
We are not alone.
It is a great thing that there are hundreds of millions of us doing our jobs every day.
Whether intentional or not, our decision to wake up and participate in society every morning is a great gift to ourselves and to everyone else, strangers and friends alike.
